We all want to preserve our natural teeth for as long as possible. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure that our dental hygiene is as good as possible. Brushing our teeth twice a day is the most obvious thing that we can do to keep our mouth healthy, but there are lots of other little steps that we can take that you might not necessarily think of.
To help you ensure that you enjoy superb oral health, we have put together the following list of our favorite dental hygiene tips.
Don’t Go to Bed Without Brushing Your Teeth
We know that when you are tired at the end of the day, brushing your teeth can seem like a chore. However, going to bed without brushing your teeth is one of the worst things that you can do for your oral health. We accumulate lots of food particles in our mouth during the course of the day and it is when these interact with the bacteria in our mouths that plaque can form and cause dental decay. Unfortunately, if you fail to brush your teeth before bed, this food debris sits in your mouth overnight, giving the bacteria plenty of time to get destructive.
Floss Every Day
If you aren’t used to flossing regularly, you might find the process cumbersome and a lot of effort. Nevertheless, you should persist with flossing on a daily basis. Flossing removes the teeny tiny food particles and bacteria that get stuck between our teeth that a regular toothbrush simply can’t remove. By flossing daily, you can enjoy better breath and keep gum disease at bay.
Don’t Neglect to Clean Your Tongue
Often, we are so focused on our teeth that we forget another important part of our mouths that we need to clean – our tongue. The tongue has a large surface area that is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. If they are allowed to accumulate on your tongue, they will cause bad breath and other oral health problems. Be sure to give your tongue a gentle brush each and every time you clean your teeth.
Choose Fluoride Toothpaste
There may be many different kinds of toothpaste to choose from, but they are not all created equal. For a toothpaste to be effective at cleaning your teeth and preventing oral health problems from occurring, you must choose a variety that contains fluoride. This is because fluoride strengthens teeth and works against the destructive acids produced by plaque, preventing tooth decay.
Limit Your Intake of The Sweet Stuff
Most of us love a sugary treat, but anything that contains high levels of sugar is bad news for your teeth. As well as the obvious products like candies and cakes, there are hidden sugars in a lot of other foods too including alcoholic drinks and processed meals.
Drink Plenty of Water
There literally is nothing better for our body and our oral hygiene than water. Dentists recommend that you drink a large glass of water after every meal to help wash away some of the food particles and bacteria from your teeth.
Visit Your Dentist Regularly
When it comes to the battle against tooth decay and gum disease, your dentist is firmly in your corner. Regular visits enable your experienced professional to keep a close eye on the health of your teeth and make recommendations for treatment before you can suffer from severe dental pain, infections, and tooth loss. Make sure you make an appointment for a dental check-up at least once every six months.
